Lawrence Herrera, 39, typewriter mechanic, saved John C. Di Lorenzo and Joseph J. Lo Curto from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, August 27, 1938. Herrera jumped from a passing speedboat and swam fifty feet to the men although he had seen only the head of one. He pulled Di Lorenzo’s head above the surface and then noted Lo Curto, who was unconscious, clinging to Di Lorenzo’s waist. Herrera was submerged briefly by the weight, and then he separated the men and took hold of Lo Curto. Di Lorenzo threw his arms around Herrera’s neck, and they bobbed up and down. Releasing Lo Curto, Herrera broke Di Lorenzo’s hold; and holding one in each arm, he drifted 75 feet farther from the bar. Di Lorenzo became unconscious. Herrera then held both with one arm and swam with great exertion 100 feet against a current of 1.5 m.p.h. to wadable water. Di Lorenzo and Lo Curto were revived. (See case of JOSEPH J. LOCURTO )
