LaTonya S. Farmer died after saving De-Janelle L. and Tiffany M. Lockett from burning, Lawrence, Kansas, January 17, 1993. De-Janelle, 2, and her sister, Tiffany, 4, were spending the night in a bedroom of their grandmother’s second-floor apartment when fire broke out in another unit of the two-story building. The fire filled the grandmother’s apartment with smoke and blocked its sole exit door. The girls’ aunt, LaTonya, 17, high school student, also was in the bedroom and was alerted to the fire. Rather than escape the apartment through a window in the bedroom, LaTonya secured De-Janelle, Tiffany, and their older sister and lowered De-Janelle and Tiffany through the window to safety. She then lost consciousness and was found at the base of the window along with the other girl by firefighters who arrived shortly. De-Janelle and Tiffany were taken to the hospital for observation but were not injured. Their sister survived, but LaTonya and another girl in the apartment died of effects of the fire. 67477-7855
