Larry Ray Hopkins, 17, schoolboy, saved David L. Utley, Jr., and attempted to save Jerry M. Rhea, both 11, schoolboys, from drowning, Garland, Texas, April 6, 1959. While with other boys in a rowboat on a small lake, Jerry, who could not swim, fell into water nine feet deep 25 feet from the nearest bank. He grasped David and struggled with him, causing both boys to he submerged several times. Hopkins removed his shirt and shoes and dived from the boat into the water, surfacing between the boys. Jerry threw one arm around the neck of Hopkins, and David grasped him around the waist, causing all three to he submerged. Hopkins broke the holds, and all returned to the surface. Pushing David ahead of him and towing Jerry, Hopkins swam 15 feet toward the bank and then pushed David to wadable water. As David waded to the bank, Hopkins suffered a severe attack of leg cramps and lost his hold on Jerry, who sank. Hopkins managed to get to the bank. Soon afterward he re-entered the water, accompanied by a boy. They dived from the surface several times, attempting without success to locate Jerry. Police then arrived and located Jerry in a half an hour, but he could not he revived.
