Larry D. Hoppe saved Steven D. Current from being killed by a train, Winnebago, Minnesota, June 9, 1961. When Steven, 5, and another small boy wandered onto a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching, Larry, 16, schoolboy, ran to them and led them away. Breaking from Larry’s grasp, Steven ran back onto the track as the train, traveling at 15 m.p.h., approached to within 35 feet of him. Larry ran 15 feet to the track and stepped into the path of the train when the locomotive was 18 feet away. Without breaking his stride, Larry caught Steven in the crook of his arm and then dived forward with him, clearing the track when the engine was within six feet of them. Larry, retaining hold of Steven, landed in glass beyond the track and rolled away from it as the train passed at unreduced speed.
