Larry A. Holder died in an attempt to save a man from drowning, Algonquin, Illinois, July 22, 1982. Holder, 33, police officer, was directing traffic near Crystal Creek, which was swollen from recent heavy rains. On receiving a report that a man had entered the creek upstream, Holder waded through a flooded parking lot adjacent the creek to position himself for effecting the man’s rescue. Unbeknownst to Holder, the creek’s raging current had washed away a portion of its bank, and Holder stepped into the deep, fast-flowing water. He was carried downstream, where he submerged and drowned.
