Kent Gray died attempting to save David W. Downes from suffocation, Goree, Texas, December 7, 1994. Downes, 26, lost consciousness in the oxygen- deficient atmosphere of the underground sewer shaft in which he was working. From outside the shaft, at ground level, Gray, 42, hydraulic mechanic, who was working with Downes on that job, saw that Downes was in trouble, as did another man at the scene. The other man left to secure a breathing apparatus, and when he returned to the scene moments later, he found Gray inside the shaft with Downes, Downes then wearing a breathing mask. Both men were unconscious. They were removed by firefighters who arrived shortly, but neither could be revived.
