Kennis Steven Goodman rescued a man from assault, Columbia, South Carolina, January 14, 2025. Inside a chain-store pharmacy, the man, 74, was walking toward the photo department when a 47-year-old man, armed with a knife with a serrated, 5-inch blade, approached him from behind, knocked him facedown to the floor, and repeatedly stabbed him. At the checkout counter, near the front entrance, patron Goodman, 34, delivery driver, saw the unfolding attack. Goodman, who was not armed, charged toward the attack and kicked the assailant off the man, then tackled the assailant, who outweighed him by about 50 pounds, and fought for control of the knife, which he seized from him. Goodman then held the assailant down on the floor while store employees tended to the man, who had wounds to his neck and upper body. Arriving police took the assailant into custody and the man, who had lost a lot of blood, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. As the man recovered in the following weeks, he underwent physical therapy. Goodman was physically uninjured, but he sought mental-health counseling after the rescue.
