Kenneth Wayne Jones died attempting to save a man and boy from drowning, Radford, Virginia, June 29, 1991. A 37-year-old man and his young son were fishing and wading along the bank of the New River when they lost their footing and struggled against the river’s swift current in a deep hole. They called for help. Jones, 30, contractor, and three other men were fishing nearby in the river. After two of the others began to rescue the man and his son and encountered difficulty, Jones started toward them, but he was caught in the current and carried downstream, where he submerged. Jones was recovered after the others made it to safety, but he could not be revived.
