Kenneth E. Long, 11, schoolboy, saved Grace H. Washick, 21, from drowning, Merrifield, Minnesota, August 10, 1918. Having swum a few strokes, Miss Washick attempted to stand on bottom and was unexpectedly submerged in deep water in North Long Lake 70 feet from the bank. Kenneth, who weighed about half as much as Miss Washick, jumped from a diving tower and swam 20 feet to her. As he reached to take hold of her, she grasped him, and both were submerged. She frantically grasped and released him several times, and he went under water at least twice before he got hold of her wrist. He then swam six feet to wadable water, pulling Miss Washick behind him. 20034-1691
