Kenneth E. Jones saved an indeterminate number of persons from being struck by a moving vehicle, Takoma Park, Maryland, June 3, 1983. When a stalled garbage truck lost its brakes and began to roll backward down a hill toward oncoming traffic, Jones, 52, sanitation supervisor, jumped onto the truck, reached into the cab, and steered the truck out of the path of two oncoming cars. As the 20-ton truck’s speed increased steadily, Jones steered toward a vacant lot, but the truck’s wheels dropped into a gully. The truck overturned, landing on Jones. Pinned under the truck for more than two hours, Jones was freed eventually by firemen, then was hospitalized. He suffered injuries to both legs and was left with permanent impairment.
