Kenneth Dion Martin, 30, clergyman, attempted to save Edwin M. Lewis, 15, student, from drowning, Weekapaug, Rhode Island, July 15, 1920. (See case of DONALD W. ROBINSON.) Edwin called for help from a point 190 feet from shore and was carried 50 feet farther out. Martin waded from shore and swam 90 feet to Edwin, who had lost all self control. After supporting Edwin briefly on his own chest, Martin swam beside Edwin, holding him with one arm. A wave then separated them and carried Martin toward shore, but he plunged back toward Edwin, who had disappeared under a wave, and got hold of him. Both were carried away from shore and were submerged several times by the waves. Martin then lost his hold on Edwin, and Edwin was drowned. Being nearly exhausted, Martin floated and was carried to a point about 350 feet from shore. He was then picked up unconscious by men in a boat and was revived. 20795-1800
