Kenneth A. Miller saved Richard D. Murphy from suffocation, Ottawa, Ontario, May 22, 1971. At night, fire broke out in the living room of a second-floor apartment where Richard, 7, had been left in the care of a man, 53. Among those attracted were Miller, 49, government clerk, and the building superintendent, who opened the apartment door but was driven back by dense smoke. Miller then crawled into the apartment hall, where visibility was nil, and proceeded along it until he found Richard on the floor. Pulling the boy with him, Miller passed within four feet of the spreading flames as he crawled out of the apartment. Richard had inhaled some smoke but recovered after brief hospitalization. Firemen extinguished the flames and removed the 53-year-old man.
