Keith Stuart Hathaway rescued William T. Jordan from burning, Honolulu, Hawaii, December 8, 1969. In a two-story frame building, fire broke out in a second-floor efficiency apartment where William, 2, was asleep while his mother was in the basement laundry. Among those attracted from nearby dwellings was Hathaway, college student, 26. Deciding to alert the occupants of the building, Hathaway ascended to the second floor. He saw a man in the hall and at the same time heard William crying inside the burning apartment. The man kicked open the apartment door; and Hathaway crawled into the room beneath very dense smoke. Flames on the wall opposite the door were spreading rapidly. Hathaway, his eyes closed, crawled about until he located the bed. Feeling effects of the intense heat, he pulled William from the bed and crawled back to the door, which was closed. The man in the hall opened the door. Hathaway was gasping for air as he ran from the building, carrying William and followed by the man. William had suffered burns; Hathaway had sustained blisters. Both recovered.
