Keith A. Ellement, 12, schoolboy, saved an indeterminate number of children from being struck by a truck, Buffalo, New York, June 5, 1967. About 40 schoolchildren were crossing a street intersection when a tire on an approaching truck blew out. The vehicle went out of control and moved toward the children at about 30 m.p.h. The woman guard on duty at the intersection called to Keith, a member of the school safety patrol, to help her get the children out of the truck’s path. As the woman pushed about half of the children toward one side of the street, Keith ran into the path of the oncoming truck, spread his arms, and herded the rest of the children toward the other side. The truck passed through the opening between the two groups of children, narrowly missing Keith and the woman guard before stopping about 100 feet beyond the crossing.
