Katie Beth Hunter, 13, schoolgirl, saved Jack D. Ledbetter, 12, from drowning, Crowley, Texas, February 8, 1947. A boat in which Katie, Jack, Jack’s 13-year-old sister Mary, and David H. Vandervoort were riding on a lake overturned, throwing all into cold water 10 feet deep. Jack grabbed David, and they were briefly submerged 30 feet from the bank. David freed himself, gave Jack a push toward the bank, and swam to the bank to remove his clothing. Meanwhile Katie swam to the bank and removed her shoes and outer clothing. Seeing Jack flailing his arms at a point 15 feet from the bank, she entered the water and swam to him. He tried to grab her; but she swam behind him, clasped him with one arm, and swam to the bank. Mary, who was submerged and unconscious, was rescued by David. 409609-3506
