Justin J. McCarthy, 12, schoolboy, attempted to save Gladys M. Lowd, 13, from drowning, Washington, D. C., August 31, 1908. Justin dived from a floating timber into a deep pond and grabbed Gladys, who had fallen from the timber, by her hair, but the girl clasped him about the neck and took him under the water. Justin freed himself, and as they rose, Gladys was able to grasp the timber, which another boy poled ashore. Justin, almost exhausted, was in imminent danger of drowning, when a man waded in and pulled him out. 3277-373
