Julius T. Malone, 38, hotel engineer, saved an indeterminate number of persons and died attempting to save others from burning, Los Angeles, California, November 18, 1912. Fire was discovered at night near the elevator shaft at the second floor of a six-story hotel building. Guests were roused, and a number of them were taken to the first floor in the elevator by the operator. He became frightened when flames appeared around the shaft, and he deserted the elevator. Guests were still screaming at the upper floors, and Malone entered the elevator and brought down one or more loads of persons. He again ascended but left the elevator at an upper story. A few minutes later he tumbled down the stairs into the lobby with his clothing aflame. He was hurried to the hospital but died of his burns in a few hours. 9668-1249
