Jules J. Marasciullo saved Nicholas J. Lamberti and attempted to save Leo Peter Barsotti from drowning, Ocean City, New Jersey, May 27, 1970. In the Atlantic Ocean, Nicholas, 17, college student, and Barsotti, 21, sales clerk, got into trouble attempting to help a young woman who was in difficulty but later reached safety unaided. As they were carried seaward by a strong current, Nicholas called for help. Jules, 17, college student, swam to their aid with a surfboard. He reached Nicholas, who was treading water feebly, and aided him onto the board. Leaving the board, Jules swam to Barsotti, who was inert with his head underwater. Jules was unable to tow Barsotti against the current to the surfboard, and Nicholas was too fatigued to propel the board to them. Jules swam alone to the board, on which he and Nicholas were able to return to shore. Barsotti’s body later was recovered.
