Joseph S. Owen, Jr., rescued Susan S. Kuritzky from burning, College Park, Maryland, December 24, 1970. When the two-door automobile containing Mrs. Kuritzky, 23, and her husband was involved in an accident, gasoline was splashed onto the pavement, the rear of the vehicle, and its roof. The fuel caught fire; and flames also broke out at the engine. Owen, 27, meat cutter, ran to the passenger side of the automobile and tried in vain to open the door. Meanwhile another man had opened the other door, providing an exit for the husband. Owen ran around the automobile to the open door and extended his head and shoulders into the front compartment. Flames then had appeared under the dash and in the rear seat area. Owen grasped Mrs. Kuritzky, who had sustained some burns, and pulled her from the automobile.
