Joseph Nicholas Perry attempted to save Antone L. Correia from burning, New Bedford, Massachusetts, January 31, 1930. Investigating indications of fire in a cotton bin in a mill, Correia, 66, feeder; Perry, 21, bale breaker, and two other men were picking out handfuls of smoldering cotton. Loose cotton one to three feet deep lay on the floor of the bin. As Perry, carrying a handful of cotton, was about to step out of the open end, fire blazed around his feet and flashed through the bin. Perry jumped out, stopped a few feet from the bin, and then saw Correia standing bewildered against one side of the bin and 12 feet from the open end. He ran to Correia and tried to drag him out but moved him no appreciable distance. Perry was burning and suffering pain. Suddenly feeling weak, he left the bin and ran outside the building. He put out the fire on his clothing by rolling in a snowbank. Correia got out of the bin but died from burns the next day. One of the other men died a day later, and another was seriously burned but recovered. Perry was seriously burned and was disabled for nine months. 31078-2628
