Joseph Michalski, 26, rug-mill printer, died attempting to save Catherine S. Smullin, 7, from drowning, Amsterdam, New York, January 25, 1916. The ice on Sanford’s Mill pond broke and let Catherine fall into water 10 feet deep. Two men who went to help her broke in but got out again on solid ice. Michalski, who was very heavily dressed, approached the hole from the opposite side alone, and when he reached the edge of the hole, the ice broke and he fell in. He struggled helplessly beyond reach of the ice and then sank and was drowned. Catherine was also drowned. 16039-1242
