Joseph L. Pilkenton, 48, teacher, saved Vivien B. Albright, 5, from being killed by a train, Brodhead, Kentucky, April 16, 1916. Vivien fell between the rails of a track on which a passenger train was approaching. Pilkenton ran 60 feet and stepped between the rails, reaching her when the train was about 20 feet away and advancing at a speed of 15 m.p.h. He seized her and lifted her onto a platform, out of the path of the train. He tried to follow her onto the platform but struck his shin and fell. While he was still prostrate, his feet between the platform and the track, the front part of the locomotive passed him, but he crawled onto the platform without being struck. 16365-1354
