Joseph L. Koch saved Le Roy R. Rennie from drowning, Pinedale, Wyoming, July 3, 1938. A kayak in which Rennie, 18, schoolboy, and two other youths were riding in Lake Fremont overturned in water 40 feet deep 500 feet from shore. The water was very cold. One youth got hold of a life preserver and swam to shore. Rennie swam 100 feet toward shore, became greatly fatigued, and was submerged briefly. Koch, 18, Civilian Conservation Corps member, dived from a boat house at the shore and swam 375 feet to Rennie, who was dazed. He towed Rennie 250 feet toward shore, becoming greatly fatigued and somewhat numb from cold. A motor boat then reached them, and Rennie was pulled into it. A life preserver was thrown to Koch; and the boat was driven toward one of Rennie’s companions, who sank and was drowned. Koch rested a few minutes and then swam a hundred feet to a dock. He was chilled and nervous. 37216-3241
