Joseph J. Lo Curto, 23, assistant buyer, attempted to save John C. Di Lorenzo, 25, student, from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, August 27, 1938. While wading on a sand-bar to release a stranded boat in Gerritsen Inlet of Jamaica Bay, Di Lorenzo got into deep water and 10 feet from the bar. From the boat, which was then in deep water, Lo Curto, who was a poor swimmer, swam 20 feet to Di Lorenzo. He threw his arms around Lo Curto, and they were submerged several times. Lo Curto struggled to free himself and became semi-conscious, he and Di Lorenzo clinging together. Lawrence Herrera then swam to Lo Curto and Di Lorenzo and towed them to wadable water.
