Joseph H. Kupukaa, Jr., rescued Ramona L. Tuuga from assault, Ewa Beach, Hawaii, October 5, 1996. In the back yard of her residence, Ms. Tuuga, 34, was attacked by a man, who, armed with a knife, had just attacked her young nephew and daughter. Ms. Tuuga screamed for help, attracting the attention of Kupukaa, 28, who lived nearby. Kupukaa ran to Ms. Tuuga’s yard and positioned himself behind the assailant. He grasped the assailant’s knife hand and disarmed him, then removed the weapon from the scene. Police arrived shortly and arrested the assailant. Ms. Tuuga and the children received hospital treatment for their injuries, Ms. Tuuga’s daughter requiring surgery. They recovered.
