Joseph C. Horine rescued Marvin E. Wightman from electric shock, Avenal, California, March 2, 1940. Wightman, 47, contractor, took hold of an iron pipe that was suspended on a cable from a derrick, with one end of the pipe resting on the ground. The cable was in contact with a wire that carried 11,000 volts of electricity. Wightman was shocked and became unconscious; but he continued to stand, his hands remaining around the pipe. Smoke and some flame rose from his hands. Having in mind to have his feet off the ground to avoid shock, Horine, 41, laborer, ran 25 feet and lunged against Wightman; but his feet touched the ground; and he was shocked. His lunge knocked Wightman free of the pipe, and they fell to the ground and were unconscious. They were revived. Wightman sustained serious burns but recovered. Horine sustained burns on his shoulder, arm, and feet; was fully disabled for four days; but recovered in a month. 38291-3190
