Joseph A. McCabe saved Joseph O. Hyman, Jr., and William R. Baker from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, January 15, 1914. Joseph Hyman, 10, and William, 10, broke through the ice on Orient Pond and went beneath the surface in water eight feet deep, 60 feet from the bank. McCabe, 14, student, skated rapidly to the hole and reached to help Joseph, but the ice broke and he fell into the water. He swam one or two strokes to Joseph and tried to push him up on the ice. Another boy extended a hockey stick five feet long, and Joseph grasped it. McCabe pushed up on Joseph and he got out of the water. Then McCabe swam two or three strokes to William, who was semiconscious. He tried to push William up on the ice, but about four feet of ice broke under his weight. McCabe then reached solid ice with William and was able to push him up on it. McCabe then got up on the ice with the assistance of the boy with the stick. He was so tired and numb that he could hardly stand and other boys took him to the bank on a sled. 12481-1051
