John W. Pangburn saved an unidentified woman and child from being run over by a train, Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, October 26, 1913. The woman, carrying her child, walked between the rails of a railroad track at a time when a passenger train was approaching on it. A train was passing on an adjacent track. Pangburn, 31, planing-mill superintendent, heard the warning toots of the whistle and saw the woman’s danger. He ran 150 feet to a point between the rails behind the woman, grabbed her with one arm, and threw her and the child off the track. Pangburn stepped off the track, falling to his knees, just in time to avoid being struck by the pilot of the locomotive. The train was then running 10 m.p.h. 11399-1098
