John W. Matheson, 22, farmer, helped in an attempt to save Donald W. McLean, 22, machinist, from drowning, Marion Bridge, Nova Scotia, January 8, 1916. McLean broke through thin ice on the Mira River, where the water was 20 feet deep. He tried to get on the ice, but it broke when he bore his weight on it. Matheson skated to a point 25 feet from McLean, crawled on his hands and knees to a point six feet from him, and extended a hockey stick to him. Another man skated to a point six feet behind Matheson and extended a hockey stick to him. Both men then started to draw McLean on the ice, but it broke. The man who had been behind Matheson swam and broke the ice 25 feet to neck-deep water. Matheson and McLean followed him, and a man came to the hole and assisted them on the ice. 15990-1530
