John W. Martin saved Josephine E. Moser from drowning, Williamsport, Maryland, December 20, 1972. Mrs. Moser, 52, fell into deep water in the Potomac River 600 feet from the bank. Martin, 26, tannery worker, undressed to his trousers, entered the cold water, and with some difficulty because of the current swam to Mrs. Moser. She was unconscious. Martin towed Mrs. Moser across the current, which moved them downstream. His limbs began to tire, but he continued with Mrs. Moser to 20 feet from the bank, where he found footing. By the time he got Mrs. Moser to the bank, Martin was so fatigued that others had to pull him from the water. Mrs. Moser was revived.
