John W. Horton II rescued John Winstead from assault, Madison, Tennessee, January 14, 1991. In the parking lot of a supermarket, Winstead, 35, was attacked by a man armed with a knife when he intervened in the man’s attack of a woman there. Horton, 26, deliveryman, was in his truck parked nearby when he heard screams. He ran to the scene and, approaching the assailant from behind, grabbed him. He and Winstead wrestled the assailant to thepavement and held him until police arrived and arrested him. Winstead was hospitalized more than two weeks for treatment, including surgery, of his wounds, and he recovered. Horton sustained a knife wound to his left thigh during the scuffle, and he too recovered.
