John W. Ely, 28, laborer, saved Edward D., 26, and George W., 24, and attempted to save Joseph Johnson, 23, from drowning, Point Marion, Pennsylvania, December 8, 1907. Ely crossed the Cheat River on weak ice and, lying on the ice, pulled Edward and George, separately, from a hole with a 12-foot fish pole. The ice broke under him as he extended the pole to Joseph, but he reached shore after a five-minute struggle in the water. Joseph was drowned. 2491-259
