John V. Masterson, 19, student, saved an indeterminate child or children from a runaway, New Brunswick, New Jersey, June 9, 1924. As about 900 school children were marching on the roadway of a street, a frightened team, which was hitched to a heavy wagon, turned into the street and swerved toward the procession. Masterson, who was not accustomed to handling horses and who had a strained side, ran alongside the team and caught a rein close to the bit. He was lifted from his feet, brushed against the side of the horse, and was dragged along with one or both feet on the street. His hold caused the team to swing gradually away from the children. The team began to gallop, and Masterson was carried along, getting his footing only at long intervals for a time and then finally getting good footing as he ran with the horses going at reduced speed. They went 600 feet after Masterson took hold and then bumped lightly into the rear of a truck and stopped. Masterson was not injured. 24318-2052
