John S. Kokoska saved George W. Plots from suffocation, Detroit, Michigan, July 25, 1932. Kokoska, 45, steamfitter, who knew gas was in the manhole, took a rope in his hand, told persons at the top to pull him up if he jerked the rope, and descended the ladder to rescue Plots, 36, electric welder, whom he heard wading toward the manhole. He saw Plots in the sewer close to the manhole, and Kokoska grasped him as he was about to collapse and pulled him to the manhole. He then tied the rope on Plots and pushed him up as men at the top began to raise Plots. Kokoska began to feel weak and dizzy but climbed the ladder and reached the top. He soon recovered from effects of the gas. (See case of JAMES T. GIBNEY.) 32636-2664
