John Robert McAllister, 15, schoolboy, saved George A. Walters, 12 schoolboy, from drowning, Pine River, Minnesota, July 26, 1919. While swimming in deep water in Sand Lake 120 feet from the bank, George became frightened and lost control of himself. He called for help, and John waded 260 feet and swam 80 feet to him. He reached George as he was about to sink a third time, and George immediately got his arm across John’s back and attempted to climb upon him. John purposely sank and pushed George from him. He then took hold of George under the arm and swam with him 30 feet to wadable water, submerging himself three times during the swim to rest momentarily on the bottom. 19784-1689
