John R. Lentz, 24, telephone installer, helped to save William E. Wampler, 29, telephone installer, from drowning, Atlantic City, New Jersey, August 17, 1926. While Wampler, Lentz, and Justin Murray Horner were swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Wampler became tired and was unable to make progress toward shore against an undertow. It was dark. Lentz and Horner swam 30 feet to him and tried for five minutes to take him toward shore, but they drifted 50 feet farther seaward. At Wampler’s suggestion, Lentz then swam with great exertion 350 feet and waded to land to get a boat. Five other men in a boat reached Warnpler and Horner about 450 feet from shore and rescued them. Lentz was fatigued and winded. Wampler required the attention of a physician, but he recovered.
