John Murray, 27, laborer, saved Patrick Eustace, 25, laborer, from a fatal fall, Chicago, Illinois, June 27, 1911. Eustace stepped from the 20th floor of an uncompleted building into the elevator shaft, which was not enclosed. Murray, who was standing at the shaft on the floor below, saw Eustace begin to fall. Gripping with one arm a two-inch by four-inch upright, which was the only thing near the shaft to which he could hold, Murray leaned out and threw his free arm around Eustace’s body. Eustace seized Murray by the clothing and flesh at his shoulder. The weight of Eustace bore Murray to the floor so that his head and shoulders were over the shaft. The grasp of each on the other was broken, but Eustace’s course was so altered that he lit on the 18th floor. Murray’s shoulder was slightly wrenched. Eustace was not seriously injured but was temporarily demented by fright. 6874-1226
