John L. Long, 40, farmer, died attempting to save Harold W. Symes, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, McAllaster, Kansas, August 10, 1915. Harold and Long’s son entered the North Branch of the Smoky Hill River to bathe, and they encountered deep water at a point 50 feet from the bank. Long’s son swam to shallow water, but Harold became distressed. Long, who was a good swimmer, ran to the water and waded until he got into the hole. Harold grasped him, and they went beneath the surface. When they came up, they were seven feet apart. Long seemed to be helpless, and, after drifting a very short distance, he sank and was drowned. Harold also was drowned. 15348-1184
