John L. Kroll, 42, crossing watchman, saved Raymond J. Allen, 7, from being killed by a train, Niagara Falls, New York, January 2, 1939. After he had awaited the passing of a passenger-train, Raymond ran on a crossing onto a track on which a freight-train was approaching at a speed of 21 m.p.h. Kroll ran 31 feet; and crossing one rail, he got hold of Raymond’s clothing. The locomotive then was 10 feet from him. Kroll tripped and fell forward clear of the track, shoving Raymond to the ground as he fell. The locomotive then passed them at unreduced speed. Neither Kroll nor Raymond was injured.
