John L. Hurley, 27, teacher, attempted to save Samuel Peters, 20, oiler, from electric shock, Malden, Massachusetts, October 20, 1913. Peters picked up a fallen wire carrying 2,300 volts of electricity and fell to the sidewalk with the wire in his hands. He writhed and frothed at the mouth, and his clothing and flesh were burning. Hurley tried unsuccessfully to knock the wire away from Peters. Hurley then put a pair of rubbers on his hands and grasped the wire, but he was instantly rendered unconscious and fell with his hand in contact with the wire. He and Peters were soon released, but Peters was then dead. Hurley regained consciousness in a half-hour, but a joint of his thumb had to be amputated. 12275-1289
