John J. Hutt, 42, carpenter, saved M. Louise Champoux, 9, from drowning, Cherry Valley, Massachusetts, January 21, 1915. Louise, who could not swim, broke through ice while sliding on Olney Pond and fell into water about 12 feet deep at a point 30 feet from the bank. Hutt ran to the pond, slid over the ice on his stomach for about 15 feet, and then crawled toward Louise. She went beneath the surface and came up under the ice at the side of the hole farthest from Hutt. At a moment when Hutt was about four feet from her, the ice broke under him, and he plunged head first into the water, which was very foul. When he came to the surface, he could not see Louise. He dived and found her at the bottom, unconscious. He brought her up and put her on the ice. The ice broke under him as he tried to get on it, and he pushed Louise ahead of him and swam and broke about five feet of ice before he was able to get up on it. Hutt carried Louise to the bank. She was revived. Hutt was disabled three days. 14269-1157
