John J. Herbert, 21, chauffeur, attempted to save James R. Foley, 22, salesman, from drowning, North Reading, Massachusetts, December 20, 1925. While skating on Martins Pond 175 feet from the bank, Foley and a female companion broke through the ice and went into water eight feet deep. A man attempted to save them, but the ice broke and he fell in as well. A second man got the first rescuer and the woman out; Foley had submerged by then. Herbert arrived at the scene and heard an appeal for someone to get Foley. Herbert removed his shoes and jumped into the hole, holding the end of a short rope. In the jump the rope was pulled from the grasp of a man on the ice who held the other end. Herbert went under the surface several times but could not locate Foley. Becoming numbed and winded, he caught hold of a ladder that was shoved toward him and was helped onto the ice. Foley was drowned. 26095-2262
