John H. King died after helping to save Rene L. Lavalier, Jr., from drowning, Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 2, 1987. Rene, 4, who could not swim, was in a station wagon that rolled backward into the Red River and began to submerge. King, 39, who was fishing nearby, jumped fully clothed into the river, swam to the rear of the car, and grabbed Rene as the car sank. Holding Rene, King was carried downstream by the current. He submerged several times and called for help. Another man dived into the river and swam to King, who pushed Rene to him as he submerged again. The other man took Rene to the bank. King was later recovered from the river; he had drowned.
