John Frederick McLaughlin, 16, schoolboy, died attempting to save Joseph L. Henricksen, 9, from drowning, Shaffton, Iowa, August 11, 1929. While Joseph was wading on a submerged bar in the Wapsipinicon River 30 feet from the bank, he stepped into water eight feet deep. John, who was fully clothed, dived from the bank and swam to him. John grasped Joseph with one arm and tried to swim toward the bank but was carried by the current for more than 100 feet. Joseph put his arms around John’s neck, and both sank and were drowned.
