John F. Williams died attempting to save Marilyn E. Madsen from drowning, Scott Bar, California, June 28, 1940. While swimming in the Scott River, Marilyn, 15, floundered in water 10 feet deep 15 feet from the bank and was submerged. Williams, 44, senior forest ranger, who was clothed, dived from the bank, swam five feet under the surface, and got hold of Marilyn. They rose to the surface, Williams’s arm being across her back. Marilyn placed her arms around Williams’s neck, and they were submerged. Her head rose above the water. Releasing his hold, Williams pushed Marilyn three feet toward the bank, Marilyn releasing her hold. Williams rose, called feebly for help, floated for several seconds, and then sank. He was drowned. A daughter of Williams then supported Marilyn a moment; and a pole was extended to Marilyn, who was pulled to wadable water. 38609-3197
