John F. Johnson, Jr., died attempting to save Flavio Comacho from drowning, Seaside Park, New Jersey, July 2, 1978. At a beach on the Atlantic Ocean, Comacho, 21, became caught in a rip current. Johnson, 24, assistant township administrator, entered the choppy water and swam to where Comacho by then had gone under in deep water 150 feet from shore. After struggling against the current, Johnson called for help and then disappeared from sight. Both men drowned.
