John E. Moore helped to rescue Brenda L. Capri from burning, Dunn, North Carolina, December 5, 1989. Mrs. Capri, 26, was in the driver’sseat of a burning van, pinned by the steering column, after a highway accident. Driving nearby, Moore, 43, stopped at the scene and ran tothe driver’s door of the van, but it was jammed. He then opened the rear doors of the van but was unable to enter because of dense smoke filling the van’s interior. Moore returned to the driver’s door and was able to open it. He extended his upper body into the van and attempted to free Mrs. Capri. Another man arrived and, with a piece of metal, pushed the steering column away from her. Moore pulled Mrs. Capri out of the van, and he, the other man, and a third man who had joined them then carried her to safety. The van was shortly engulfed in flame. Mrs. Capri was hospitalized 25 days for third-degree burns to her legs and other injuries. Moore recovered from minor burns to an arm and hand and smoke inhalation.
