John E. Lemire, 17, schoolboy, saved Stanley W. Oke, 6, from drowning, Lowell, Massachusetts, April 30, 1947. Stanley fell into the Merrimack River and was carried away from the bank by a strong current in cold and turbulent water seven feet deep. The river bed had numerous sharp submerged rock projections, and rapids were 500 feet downstream. After running 250 feet to the bank, Lemire swam with difficulty 75 feet to Stanley, who had drifted 150 feet downstream and 60 feet from the bank, and was unconscious. Lemire towed Stanley 65 feet to wadable water and carried him eight feet to the bank, where he revived Stanley. 41044-3508
