John A. McGinnis, 22, student, saved Helen F. Stoudt, 15, and Lulu C. Lodge, 42, from drowning, Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, September 2, 1921. While bathing in the Atlantic Ocean, Helen and and Mrs. Lodge got into deep water and were carried by a strong current to a point 400 feet from shore. McGinnis waded from shore and swam 200 feet to Helen, who was 10 feet from Mrs. Lodge. Helen took hold of the belt of his bathing suit, and he swam with her to Mrs. Lodge, who was unconscious and was sinking. Supporting both on their backs at arm’s length, McGinnis attempted to swim toward shore. The current carried them to a point 800 feet from shore before a boat was brought to them. McGinnis was then nearly exhausted. The three were taken in the boat to shore. 21977-1810
