John A. McDaniel helped to save Daniel F. Barry from drowning, Fort Payne, Alabama, June 11, 1989. Daniel, 11, was wading in the Little River above the Little River Falls when he lost his footing and was carried by the swift current toward the falls. Standing nearby on the bank, McDaniel, 26, cotton mill laborer, immediately entered the river and grasped Daniel but lost his footing as well. McDaniel held onto Daniel at the edge of the 60-foot-high falls until others pulled them from the water shortly. Daniel was bruised by the ordeal, as was McDaniel, who sustained also pulled muscles in his back and neck. Both recovered.
